My Goals Are Less Important Than Bayern Munich Success

Mario Gomez shrugs off his scoring hot streak for Bayern Munich as just "his job".
Mario Gomez continued his sparkling form with a second half hat-trick to seal the fate of FC Kaiserslautern, extending a spell that has taken his tally to 23 goals in 26 appearances for Bayern Munich this term.

Now joint-top scorer in the Bundesliga on 15 goals alongside Papiss Demba of SC Freiburg, Gomez has dragged himself out of a period of mass criticism for inconsistency in front of goal to become one of Bayern's most feared poachers. However, the German international is not getting carried away with his golden touch.

"That's my job. I know what is expected of me. Obviously, it's my goal to be the top scorer in the Bundesliga, but it wouldn't be a disaster if I didn't achieve that. For me, the most important thing is to be part of the team and contribute to the club's success with my performances," Gomez told UEFA.com.

The men from Bavaria still remain 14 points adrift of Borussia Dortmund at the top of the table but have not thrown in the towel just yet, and still have the chance to take revenge on Inter in the UEFA Champions League next month. The two sides will repeat last year's final in the last 16, a game in which Gomez only played 20 minutes.

"It's good to see him finding the net but he could have scored one during the first half [against Kaiserslautern], and that would have been much more important than our fourth and fifth goals" said coach Louis Van Gaal.

Gomez has now netted 88 goals in 167 Bundesliga games, and his coach will be hoping there is plenty more to come, as the season begins to hit the ground running again next month.
