Barcelona striker David Villa took time to praise the efforts of Sporting after the sides played out an absorbing 1-1 draw at El Molinon on Saturday evening.

David Barral’s opening goal stunned the champions, and despite creating numerous opportunities, Villa’s glorious chip was required to give Pep Guardiola’s side a share of the spoils with 10 minutes remaining.

Speaking to the media after the contest, 'El Guaje', who started his career with the Rojiblancos, was appreciative of the way that the relegation-threatened side performed.

He stated: “I give them credit, they are the team who have given us one of our hardest matches this season, and they have been very tough throughout the game. The crowd deserve a 10 out of 10.

“I am glad that we were able to get at least a point, I am happy to be a Barcelona player and this is transmitted into the game.”
